On July 26th, more than 1,000 people gathered in Geba, Memba District in Nampula, to honour the vital role of mangroves in sustaining life and livelihoods, as part of WCS’s Blue Future Project.
In a remarkable display of commitment, community members planted approximately 15,000 seedlings of the mangrove species Rhizophora mucronata, strengthening our bond with the ecosystems that protect us.
The day began with early morning planting, followed by an inspiring opening ceremony featuring powerful messages from local leaders and environmental advocates. A vibrant cultural programme unfolded throughout the day, including traditional dances, a theatrical performance on mangrove protection, and demonstrations of sustainable practices such as mangrove honey production, efficient cookstoves, and solar dryers.

The knowledge-sharing sessions brought together technicians, community leaders, partners, and the Blue Future team, fostering exchanges and new ideas for ongoing restoration efforts. Children took part in interactive learning activities and film screenings, while football brought the community to life through the “Futuro Azul League” matches for both women and men.
Our sincere gratitude goes to ArtFusion, ADPP, ADRA, AMA, InOM, UEM, Wilipiheira, Fundação Nuarro, Crimas, local authorities, and the incredible community of Geba.
