WCS Mozambique - Mangrove Revival: A Community-Led Success in Nampula, Mozambique

Mangroves are one of the most valuable coastal ecosystems, presenting great biodiversity of high economic value, protecting coastlines and sequestering carbon from the atmosphere. Their restoration contributes to sustainable development, community development, and environmental protection, benefiting both current and future generations.

The hydrological restoration of the mangrove forest in Muanangome – Lunga, in the Mossuril district of Nampula, has been fundamental for the recovery of its ecological functions, the recovery of fauna, protection from storms and floods, and more. To ensure long-term success and increase community awareness, WCS Mozambique is using hydrological maps and following a participatory approach, incorporating traditional knowledge and local experiences, and teaching new technology and innovative approaches.

Collaboration between academia, civil society organizations, government, and communities can bring lasting benefits for ecosystems, biodiversity, and nature. These efforts were made possible thanks to the partners of the “Blue Future” project: UEM; ADPP Moçambique; InOM e BAF

This critical work inspires #OceanOptimism and helps save our ocean via mangrove restoration.
